Abbey Cottingham is walking with Abbey & Kaity - The Diabetic Duo on October 10, 2009 in Kansas City, MO.
Having diabetes stinks.
Especially for me, Abbey Cottingham, because I like to do horse shows and lots of activities. It's hard going low during a show, because sometimes you don't feel good enough to do the classes and then you miss out on all the fun.
My cousin, Kaity, is turning 4 and I bet she doesn't like it too. She doesn't like having her finger poked. She says, "Ouch, Ouch!" She's very little and she shouldn't have to grow up with diabetes. I"m afraid when she goes to preschool the teachers won't know what to do when she goes low.
If you take a bath for a long time, your hands just come out pruny. But on our hands, you can see all the poke marks. Sometimes it looks like we have a thousand bug bites on our arms and stomachs because of the infusion sites for our pumps.
We shouldn't have to answer the question, "What's that thing?" when they are pointing to your pump. I don't like being different--nobody likes being different.
At school, whenever we have a birthday treat, I can't have it if I'm too high. I have to take it home in a baggie while everyone else gets to snack away. Sometimes you feel like you're the only one in the world that has diabetes. Not very many people understand.
If I didn't have diabetes, I wouldn't have to explain to anyone anymore about my diabetes. I wouldn't get teased. The day I came home and I didn't have diabetes, I would throw away my meter and throw my pump out the window. Bye, bye pumpie! As for Kaitlyn, she wouldn't be told no you can't have that because her blood sugar is too high. She wouldn't have to have diabetes as long as I did.
To make our hope and dreams come true, we need your donations. Help us raise money to find a cure for diabetes by supporting our team, "Abbey & Kaity - the Diabetic Duo" when we walk on October 10th at the Legends in Kansas City, Kansas. We are hoping to raise $3,500. With your help, we can reach our goal.
Thank you! Abbey & Kaity
